Amniotomy

Amniotomy is a procedure to break a pregnant woman’s amniotic sac. It is also called an artificial rupture of membranes or breaking water inside a pregnant woman. The amniotic sac is a pouch of fluid that surrounds and protects the baby. Breaking of the amniotic sac releases the chemicals that signal the body to begin or fasten labor contractions.
