Amoxicillin

Amoxicillin is an antibiotic. It is used to treat bacterial infections such as chest infections (including pneumonia), dental abscesses, and urinary tract infections (UTIs).

It is used in children, often to treat ear infections and chest infections.

The medicine is only available on prescription. It comes as capsules or as a liquid that you drink. It is also given by injection, but this is usually only done in a hospital.

  1. For most infections, you will start to feel better in a few days.
  2. The most common side effects of amoxicillin are feeling sick (nausea) and diarrhoea.
  3. Liquid amoxicillin can stain your teeth. This does not last and is removed by brushing.
  4. You can drink alcohol while taking amoxicillin.
  5. Amoxicillin is also called by the brand name Amoxil.
